Finca Lorena, Herbazu Mill, Naranjo, Costa Rica.

Several years ago I visited Herbazu Mill on my first visit to Costa Rica. Antonio “Tonio” Barrantes was there. A man of few words, he let his coffees do most of the talking. I have cupped and admired his family’s (Herbazu is an amalgamation of Hermanos Barrantes y Zuniga, a name he and over a ten siblings share) coffees; and had always dreamed of carrying them in our lineup—a stellar coffee for a company that believes in carrying stellar coffees. And now that dream is reality. Don Tonio’s Finca Lorena—named for his wife—is the second release of our Superstar Series of coffees that are exemplary in every way. It’s a variety of Typica discovered in Rwanda that varyingly goes by, “Rwanda Typica” or “Rwanda Lima.” It was brought over to Costa Rica to Don Tonio as two seeds, which he propogated over eight years into about 1000 trees. 2018 is the second significant harvest for Finca Lorena. The coffee is redolent with a sweet yeasty tone one might find in a Belgian Lambic beer, where the white honey process the coffee is produced using yields a fermenty sweetness of red berries, plum or sweet black grapes. As it cools its fruit pectin becomes even more sultry without falling apart. Thus, this is a coffee that really rewards the patient drinker, as it shows its best characteristics as it goes from warm to tepid. This coffee is excruciatingly limited. 4 oz tin size.
