Hambela - Alaka, Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia. This is our first directly-sourced coffee from Ethiopia. It is a beautifully expressive and clean natural-processed coffee that is full of strawberries and cream. “Hambela” means “refuge.” During WW2 the property this farm is located on was a haven for displaced people during the chaos of war. After the war, the land was given to Mulumebet Emiru, Ethiopia’s first female air force pilot, as a gift for her incredible war service. Today, her grandsons have developed that land as a force for good under the Metad name. Metad’s operations on the farm are exceptionally generous toward local laborers, and that care translates into beautiful coffees that are lovely expressions of what a world-class Yirgacheffe coffee can be. Metad purchases a large amount of “outgrower” coffee from their neighbors, who know their coffees will be taken care of properly at Metad’s mill, and that payments will be made almost immediately. Alaka is Metad’s own coffee, though, and this shining gem is the best of the best Metad produces…and is the perfect match for Brown.
